Silver Coast Legend

Overview

Lacanau is France's most iconic surf destination, a laid-back Atlantic coastal town where surf culture, pristine beaches, and pine forests converge. Located 50 kilometres west of Bordeaux on the Côte d'Argent (Silver Coast), Lacanau has been at the heart of European surf culture since the 1960s, hosting the prestigious Lacanau Pro international surfing competition every August.

The town comprises two distinct areas: Lacanau-Océan, the beachfront resort with surf shops, schools, and beach bars; and Lacanau-Ville, the quieter inland village on the shores of Lac de Lacanau, France's third-largest natural freshwater lake. Together, they offer a perfect blend of Atlantic surf energy and lakeside tranquility.

Surf Safety

  • Rip currents (baïnes): Strong currents pulling offshore, especially at low tide. Swim between flags, avoid sandbars, never panic—swim parallel to shore if caught.
  • Always surf near lifeguard stations during supervised hours (June–September).
  • Check surf forecast: Websites like Surf-Forecast.com, Magicseaweed.com, or Windguru provide detailed wave/wind/tide predictions.
  • Respect surf etiquette: Don't drop in on other surfers, take turns, yield to surfer closest to peak.

Lac de Lacanau

Lac de Lacanau is a large freshwater lake (2,000 hectares) located 5 km inland from the ocean, connected by a scenic forested corridor. The lake offers a tranquil counterpoint to the Atlantic's power—calm, warm waters ideal for families, swimming, windsurfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Lake Activities

  • Swimming: Supervised beaches at Lacanau-Ville (Plage du Moutchic) and Carreyre. Shallow, calm, gradually deepening—perfect for children.
  • Windsurfing & Kitesurfing: Consistent afternoon thermals in summer create ideal conditions. Rental shops and schools at Moutchic beach (€50–80 per session including equipment, 2026).
  • Kayaking & SUP: Rentals available (€15–25 per hour, 2026). Explore the lake's quieter southern shores and reed-lined channels.
  • Sailing: The Lacanau Sailing Club offers courses and boat rentals.
  • Fishing: Pike, perch, and carp. Fishing permits required (available at tourist office and tackle shops).
  • Cycling: The 8 km lakeside path (Voie Verte) connects Lacanau-Ville to the ocean, ideal for families.

Why Visit the Lake

After a morning surfing the Atlantic, the lake offers a serene afternoon retreat: warmer water, no waves, shaded picnic areas under pine trees, and stunning sunsets over calm waters. Many families split their days between ocean surf sessions and lake relaxation.
