Overview

Lacanau is France's most iconic surf destination, a laid-back Atlantic coastal town where surf culture, pristine beaches, and pine forests converge. Located 50 kilometres west of Bordeaux on the Côte d'Argent (Silver Coast), Lacanau has been at the heart of European surf culture since the 1960s, hosting the prestigious Lacanau Pro international surfing competition every August.

The town comprises two distinct areas: Lacanau-Océan, the beachfront resort with surf shops, schools, and beach bars; and Lacanau-Ville, the quieter inland village on the shores of Lac de Lacanau, France's third-largest natural freshwater lake. Lacanau Pro 2026

The Lacanau Pro is one of Europe's longest-running professional surf competitions, first held in 1979. Now part of the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series, the event attracts top international surfers competing for ranking points and prize money, with past champions including legends like Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, and Gabriel Medina.

Beach Guide

Lacanau's 15+ kilometres of Atlantic coastline offer diverse surf breaks and beach environments. All beaches are sandy, backed by dunes and pine forest, with lifeguard supervision in summer (June–September, 11:00 AM–7:00 PM).

Central Beach (Plage Centrale)

Best For: Surf lessons, beginners, families, spectators during Lacanau Pro

South Beach (Plage Sud / Super Sud)

Access: 2 km south of town center via D6E1 and forest trails

North Beach (Plage Nord / L'Écureuil)

Lac de Lacanau

Lac de Lacanau is a large freshwater lake (2,000 hectares) located 5 km inland from the ocean, connected by a scenic forested corridor. The lake offers a tranquil counterpoint to the Atlantic's power—calm, warm waters ideal for families, swimming, windsurfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.
