La Cité du Vin modern architecture along the Garonne waterfront in Bordeaux

Visit La Cité du Vin in 2026

Bordeaux's iconic wine museum with flowing XTU architecture, permanent collection, and 360° belvedere tasting experience.

Bordeaux Cultural Landmark

La Cité du Vin — Museum of Wine Civilizations

Opened in 2016 on the northern waterfront of Bordeaux, La Cité du Vin is a unique cultural facility dedicated to the universal heritage of wine. The museum's flowing, organic architecture — designed by Paris-based firm XTU architects — evokes the swirl of wine in a glass, the twisting vine, and the curves of the Garonne River.

Rising 55 meters above the Bassins à Flot quarter, the golden-paneled structure has become an instant Bordeaux landmark visible from across the city. Its sculptural form represents a radical departure from traditional museum architecture and signals Bordeaux's contemporary cultural ambition.

Inside, the permanent collection spans 3,000 square meters across multiple levels, offering an immersive, multisensory journey through global wine civilizations — from ancient amphora to modern viticulture, from sacred rituals to contemporary wine culture. The visit culminates at the 8th-floor belvedere, a 360° panoramic lounge where visitors enjoy a tasting glass while overlooking the Garonne estuary and Bordeaux skyline.

Inside La Cité du Vin

The essential experiences in Bordeaux's iconic wine museum.

XTU Architecture — The Building

The building itself is an architectural destination. Designed by XTU architects Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières, the structure features a flowing, organic form clad in 2,500 glass and aluminum panels that shimmer in gold and silver tones. The curves reference the swirl of wine, the gnarl of vine roots, and the bend of the Garonne. At 55 meters high and spanning 13,350 square meters, it's a landmark of 21st-century French architecture.
